Nervous Jitters

I wrote this post the day before I flew out (January 25), but I didn’t have a chance to post it until now!

I’m officially on my last full day in Canada until I fly down to Florida for a year. Now that I’ve taken care of my Canadian nostalgia, I am going to concentrate on how I am feeling at the moment! The nervous energy has fully hit me now. My flight lands in Florida tomorrow at 9am, so I’m down to about 12 hours left in Canada for an entire year! How crazy is that?

I have finished all of my Onboarding paperwork now, so that will be done come time to check in to housing on Tuesday. I just had my final trip to the bank to change all of my money into American currency. I just have to put the finishing touches on packing and everything will be complete.

The most stressful part of the packing was to get my suitcase to the proper weight for the flight so that I would not be charged extra. The weight limit for my suitcase was 23kg or about 50 pounds. The first time I had weighed my suitcase, it was 60 pounds! My parents both took some things out of my suitcase and put it in there’s. I cut out a couple more things and the scale ended up being between 49 and 50 pounds.

While this wasn’t the end of the night before my flight, it makes more sense to include that in my next post. I’ll be writing about my flight and the visa processing that happened in the airport.

Canadian Videos!

Having been inspired by this video being posted on our Canadian CRP Facebook group:

I wanted to post my own favourite Canadian videos. However, my love for music has made my list too long for just one individual list. So, I’m going to be posting a separate Canadian music list!!!!!!

These are my favourite Canadian/Canadian themed videos (Please note: I was a political science major so that is why there are a number of political videos):

Rick Mercer Explains Canada:

I absolutely love Rick Mercer. I made my tutorial groups at university typically watch a Rick Mercer video each tutorial!

The Proof is the Proof:

Jean Chretien’s “the proof is the proof” speech. You have to love this response from a former Prime Minister of Canada!

Wayne's World:

Party time! Excellent! I absolutely love Saturday Night Live and Wayne’s World is a classic!

Brother Bear:

The Canadian moose Tuke and Rutt, voiced by Bob and Doug McKenzie, are the quintessential stereotype of Canadian!

Major Events in My Year At Disney!

Expanding on the idea of what I am looking forward to at Disney, there are so many major events that I will get to experience while in Disney. I’m going to give a brief overview of what I’m looking forward to the most.

Super Bowl XLVII
-          I absolutely love watching football. With this year’s Super Bowl set (Ravens vs. 49ers), it should be a fantastic game. Go Ravens!

Epcot’s Flower & Garden Festival (20th Anniversary)
-          I’ve only heard good things about the Flower & Garden Festival! With this festival featuring the new Oz and Monsters University movies, it should be a sight to see!

Canada Day 2013
-          I’m so excited to break out my extreme Canadian pride this year on Canada Day! I’m hoping that the whole Canadian pavilion goes all out this year!

Mickey’s Not So Scary Halloween Party
-          I’m very excited for Mickey’s Not So Scary Halloween Party! I haven’t really celebrated Halloween for a while (I always end up working somehow) so this should be a nice break for me. I’ll have some time to decide and create my costume, and I really want to go trick or treating throughout Magic Kingdom!

Epcot’s Food and Wine Festival
-          This should be a delicious event! I’m really excited to see the Ghiradelli chocolate statues!

Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party
-          Christmas time around Walt Disney World is always so magical! Attending Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party would make it even more magical!

Christmas 2013
-          Even though I will probably be working because it’s the busiest day of the year at Walt Disney World, I always love Christmas so much!

My 26th Birthday!
-          Right before my program ends, I will be celebrating my 26th birthday in Florida. There are several of us with January birthdays, so a whole lot of celebrating will be happening around this time!

I will be missing out on the 2014 Olympics, which starts February 7th, because my program ends on January 24th. It would have been fantastic to see Canada dominate in the Winter Olympics while representing Canada at Disney. I have quite the list of things to look forward to, including those which I can’t anticipate. It should be an absolutely amazing year!

Excitement!

The excitement about my year in Disney has steadily increased as I have gotten closer to my start date! I fly out this upcoming Saturday at 6am! IT’S THIS WEEK!!!!!! It’s still seems strange to think that I will be living in Florida as of this Saturday, 5 days from now!

I have kept busy this whole month prepping for Disney, but I have also had some Disney-themed fun before my departure. The weekend of January 11th-13th I travelled to Waterloo, Ontario and spent a ridiculously fun Disney weekend with Leah and Laura, who will be starting in Food and Beverage in the Canadian pavilion on March 5th and April 9th, respectively.

Our Disney weekend consisted of catching up, making plans for the super exciting year at Disney that we would be sharing together (Once Upon A Time Tea Parties!!!!!!!!!), Laura and I being very Canadian about taking turns in the front seat of Leah’s car, eating FAR too much, my being distracted by the Broncos and Ravens playoff game while at dinner (sorry again!), all of us crying for three solid hours while watching Les Miserables, and playing five different Disney board games. Leah showed off her awesome drawing skills at Disney Pictionary and had some fun solving The Sword and the Stone puzzle in Disney Wheel of Fortune (Yay Leah!) All in all, the weekend was a SUCCESS!!!!!!!!!

This past Friday I had one last get together with fellow Wendy’s employees. I have worked at Wendy’s for the past six years with the exception of two separate eight month periods where I was away at university. I have officially finished working at Wendy’s as of January 9th and I wanted to try to see as many people as possible before I left. On Friday we went to East Side Mario’s for a big group dinner! There were 20 of us there, making for quite the group for the servers to deal with! I got several presents from my lovely Wendy’s friends, including a card and a shirt signed by most Wendy’s employees. For those of you reading this, thank you so very much for the presents! I really do appreciate it! In addition, one of my managers, Eve, made me a beautiful and delicious Disney-themed cake!!!!!!!

The cake was fantastic and was a great way to end the dinner. I really want to thank everyone for the time and effort put into the preparations for the dinner. It really made for a magical dinner and I’m so lucky to have such amazing friends! Thank you all!!!!!!

After the dinner, a number of us made our way to Retro Planet in Barrie to play laser tag! We managed to get the laser tag area just to ourselves both times that we played, which made it so much more fun. We didn’t have to play against any strangers and could get incredibly competitive with each other. I was on the Red Team both times that we played and we won both times (sorry Blue Team!) I also managed to get the overall highest score the second time we played!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! YAY!!!!!!! That was super awesome!

After laser tag, we all proceeded to play the token arcade games until the place closed. My friend Weslee and I had an air hockey tournament and I won two games to one (sorry Weslee, we’ll have our rematch at some point!) We cashed in our tokens and I got a sparkly Disney princess colouring set (I thought it was appropriate!) It was a fantastic night!

Apart from my preparations and Disney-themed gatherings, I have been thinking a lot about what I am most looking forward to in the next two weeks. I am so excited to get my Disney name tag! I can’t wait to see my name and home town on there. I think that’s when it will really hit home with me. I am also excited about getting my lumberjack costume. I’m really looking forward to wearing it and representing Canada! I really can’t wait for Traditions. I’ll get to go to Disney University and experience something that not many people can actually say they have. I think that I am most looking forward to meeting everyone though! This includes everyone who is already there, everyone that will be starting on the same date as me, and everyone who will be coming after. This will be such an amazing experience and will give me the opportunity to expand my horizons. I am so lucky that it will all be happening so soon!

Pre-Disney Prep, January 2013

I am now in the month that I am leaving for Walt Disney World. It is crazy to think that just over two months ago, I was at the Face to Face interview in Toronto and now it’s almost time for me to leave! AHHHHHHH!

On January 7th, I received my Welcome Pack in the mail, which actually had my Visa in it as well! While the Welcome Pack did not have much in it, it really was exciting to receive in the mail. It came with my official acceptance letter from Disney as well as my Disney Look book! I was really happy to have my Visa as well. There is a special arrangement in place for Canadians that participate in the CRP where our Visas are sent right to us. We do not have to go to our embassy and answer questions in order to secure our Visas to work in the United States. We are so lucky to not have to go for an embassy visit, saving us time and money. Having my Visa, I have all of my work documents under control!

The final major hurdle that I had to complete was organizing my medical insurance for the first four months of my program. (Please note that I am not an expert on this topic and I am not providing any advice on how you should approach obtaining medical insurance. I am simply commenting on my own experiences). After doing a fair amount of research and looking at different policies offered by different companies, I went with the medical insurance that Yummy Jobs has a negotiated deal with. It was affordable and covered all of the necessary requirements for our medical insurance. Once this was purchased, I sent the name of the insurance company and my policy number off to Yummy Jobs and my medical insurance was completed!

Finally, I had to contact my phone company and get my phone contract suspended for the year that I will be gone. Got that all sorted out, so all of my major obstacles have been conquered! All I have left is to officially finish packing, which is still proving to be difficult for me. Now that I’m much closer to leaving, I am able to plan out my last few outfits for work and can pack everything else that I need. I only have a few more small things to buy (memory card for my camera, etc.) and I will be officially ready to go. It still seems crazy to me that two and a half months passed by so quickly and it is almost time for my Disney adventures to officially begin!

Pre-Disney Prep, December 2012

December was a busier month for me on the Disney front! Since I had booked my flight in November, I submitted my flight information to both Yummy Jobs and to Disney International Arrivals. I also confirmed my mailing address so that I could receive my welcome pack from Disney.

Next, I had to make arrangements regarding my student loan. Since I have been out of school for more than six months, I have been paying back my student loan. I had to contact the National Student Loans Centre to arrange for interest free payments for the year, lessening my financial worries.

As of December 13, I still hadn’t received any information on my criminal background check. I was starting to get worried at this point because Disney requires your background check at least one month in advance for your visa and I knew that the offices were going to close for the Christmas break. I went up to my local police station to check the status of my background check and they hadn’t gotten to it yet. They bumped my background check up and I was actually able to come back two hours later to pick it up! It was fantastic for them to accommodate me in this way. I scanned and sent my background check off that night.

Those of us with a start date of January 29th received an email on December 18th telling us that we were now able to pay our Program Assessment Fee for the program. The Program Assessment Fee is a payment of $100 and the money goes toward miscellaneous housing costs, such as the bus system and security. It can be paid anytime before your program start date with a credit card and is typically opened for you to pay about a month before your program. I paid my Program Assessment Fee on December 26th. This was another item that I could cross off of my to-do list for Disney!

With these things accomplished for Disney, it was starting to seem more real for me. I was actually going to work at Walt Disney World for a year! With it being December, it was my last Christmas with my family before I moved down to Florida for a year. I received quite a few goodies for my trip, including a new suitcase and a whole lot of Canadian clothing! I could start on my packing, which was a very intimidating prospect for me. I honestly did not know how I was going to figure out what I was going to need for an entire year and manage to fit it all into one suitcase. There are malls and stuff down in Florida, but finding time and having money to shop might be a little difficult once I’m down there. I’m sure I will figure it all out in time…hopefully!

Pre-Disney Prep, November 2012

After accepting my job offer with Disney, I had a few things that had to be completed for Disney as soon as possible. The first of these was a criminal background check. In Canada, we obtain our background checks through our local police stations. I went up to the Barrie Police Station on November 13th to apply and pay the $40 for the background check. I was told that it would take a few weeks for the check to go through and that I would receive it in the mail shortly afterwards.

The other major thing that I finished in November was to book my one-way flight to Florida. We were told that we are allowed to enter the United States up to ten days before your start date, so I am flying down on January 26th! I’m flying with Air Canada and leaving at 6am on that day! This will allow me some leeway in case of weather delays or anything of that sort. I also have the opportunity to do my WalMart run early and make sure that I have everything I need!

That was essentially my November as I prepared for Disney! That and telling everyone that I know (including some people I didn’t know!) that I was going to be working for Disney as of January!

Face to Face Interview!

The Face to Face interviews were scheduled on November 12th at the Ted Rogers School of Management at Ryerson University in Toronto. While I had a longer wait between the results of the application and the phone interview, the wait between the phone interview and the face to face interview was much worse for me. It seemed like it took forever, probably because I was anticipating this interview much more than the phone interview. Between the application and the phone interview, I also had much more to distract myself with, including writing my Major Research Paper for my Master’s degree, defending said paper and writing my LSATs. I did start a volunteer job at a law office though, so between this and working at Wendy’s I was still plenty busy.

Leading up to the interview, I read and re-read through a number of blogs. I wanted to make sure I was as ready as possible. I read through the jot notes that I had created for my phone interview a bunch of times. I also put together a folder with all of the documents that I needed for the interview. This included the application forms, copies of the main page of my passport and I brought several reference letters, which weren’t required but I thought would add to my application and help me stand out.

For the day of the interview, everyone was required to wear business/professional attire. This allowed me the opportunity to go shopping for a new interview outfit! I wore a purple dress top, a black and white plaid skirt, a black jacket, black tights, and black heels (which I got a ridiculous number of compliments on!)

In order to meet other applicants that were interviewing, we were directed to another facebook group for those candidates who were applicants for the Canadian CRP for 2013. Through this group, a number of us organized to meet the night before the interview in Toronto and have dinner together at The Olde Spaghetti Factory.

Since we were meeting the night before the interview and the interview was to start at 8:30am on the 12th, I got a hotel room the night before the interview. My dad and I got Barrie Burger for lunch (a small burger chain in Barrie that is absolutely delicious!) and listened to the Toronto Argonauts beat the Edmonton Eskimos in the Canadian Football League playoffs on the radio!

I met up with the people from the interview at The Olde Spaghetti Factory at 7pm. There were about 15 of us in total. It was so easy to talk with everyone and made the next day so much more comfortable. The dinner was a great way to meet people, some of which I will be working with in a few months!

On the day of the interview, we were to arrive and check in with the people from Yummy Jobs at 8:30am. I met up in the lobby of the Marriott with some of the people that I had met the night before and we all headed over to the interview together. I was sure that I would have gotten lost had I tried to find the location myself! We headed up to the ninth floor, where our presentation was to be and were met with a hallway full of people! After checking in and making small talk with everyone waiting in the hallway, we headed into one of the rooms for our Disney presentation!

The presentation covered everything that we would need to know about the CRP. We had Jill and Carrie for our presentation and they were our Disney interviewers as well. There were some trivia questions with prizes awarded, but I didn’t get chosen. Two of the people that I met from the dinner the night before the interview won prizes though! We were told that we would hear our results from the interview by November 19th, a week later.

After this, we got our interview times. They scheduled the interviews by distance away from Toronto, with those who had travelled the furthest having the first interviews. As my city is only about an hour away from Toronto, I was part of the last group of interviewees. I had to check back in with Kristen from Yummy Jobs by 4pm, which meant that I had about six hours to kill before checking back in and than some more waiting before I actually had my interview.

In order to kill some time, a few of us went to the Eaton Centre. We sat around the food court in the mall for several hours, had lunch, got some Starbucks and I headed back up with the people that had to check in again at 2:15 and 2:30. I checked in early and waited around with everyone as they went into their interviews. While it was a bit of a wait, I got to know some more people that I hadn’t had the chance to talk to before.

On the majority of the blogs that I read, people who participated in the face to face interviews were interviewed with another person. We got to go in for our interviews individually, with Jill interviewing half of the candidates and Carrie interviewing the other half. I had my interview with Carrie. I was scheduled for 6pm, but the interviews were running early so I went in at 5:45.

My interview with Carrie went really well, I felt. It was more like a chat than an actual interview and I felt really comfortable from the start. I wasn’t actually nervous going into the interview; I was just ready to get it done after my long day of waiting. My interview started with the basic Disney look questions about tattoos and piercings. I was asked a lot about my experiences working at Wendy’s for the past six years when I was not away at university. I was asked about my university experiences and living with people from different cultures. I was also asked about my choices that I had made for the CRP position (whether I wanted to work in Food & Beverage, Merchandise, or Attractions and in which order).

After my interview I headed back to Barrie with my dad (who works in Toronto and picked me up afterwards). The next morning, I received a text message from Laura at 7:50am telling me to wake up because the emails had been sent out. I ran up the stairs, turned on my computer and checked my email. I had an email entitled “Walt Disney World!” After opening it, my eyes went right to the section that stated:

CONGRATULATIONS!!

Disney World would like to offer you a Role in Food and Beverage
on the Cultural Representative Program starting
January 29th, 2013- January 24th, 2014

Needless to say, I freaked out! I screamed so loud that I woke up both my brother and my sister and my mom thought that I had seen a mouse (insert Mickey Mouse pun here!) It had to be one of the best emails I had ever received! I had to send an email back accepting the position by the end of the work day and I sent back a very excited YES! with a ridiculous number of “thank yous” attached. Immediately afterwards, I went on facebook and found out that a number of people that I had met over the past two days had received acceptances! I was part of the first group that would head out in 2013 with mostly people from the previous set of interviews. It was only 78 days until my program would start in Florida! My dream to work at Disney had come true!
